Heavy Vehicle and Dangerous Goods Route

Provisions and criteria for heavy vehicle traffic were included in the village's new Traffic Bylaw in an effort to protect our streets from excessive truckload weights with the goal of retaining and maintaining street infrastructure.
A Dangerous Goods Route was also designated in the interest of public safety as the majority of truck transporting dangerous goods are using a route that is adjacent to a schoolyard and residential development.
The Department of Highways has put up sigs on Hwy No. 26 to notify vehicle operator of this new route. The R.M. of Turtle River No. 469 is also erecting similar signage on grid roads east and west of Edam.
Excerpts from the Traffic Bylaw which identify the provisions of the Heavy Vehicle and Dangerous Goods Routes are shown below.
(m) Heavy Vehicle Route:
i. The streets set in Appendix 10 are hereby established Heavy Vehicle Routes.
ii. No person shall operate a vehicle or a combination of vehicles when the combined gross weight of the vehicles(s) with or without a load exceeds 20 tonnes (20,000kg) except on a highway within the municipality designated as a Heavy Vehicle Route.
iii. Subsection (m)(i) shall not apply to vehicles:
a) making local deliveries or pickups provided that the operator proceeds by the most direct route to or from the point of collection or delivery, as the case may be, to or from the nearest Heavy Vehicle Route.
b) proceeding to or from the business premises of the owner of the vehicle, provided that the operator proceeds, as the case may be, to or from the nearest Heavy Vehicle Route;
c) proceeding to or from a garage for the purpose of repairs, servicing, or refueling, provided that the operator proceeds by the most direct route to or from the garage, as the case may be, to or from the nearest Heavy Vehicle Route;
d) where the operator is utilizing an eating establishment on Main Street;
iv. The provisions of The Traffic Safety Act shall apply to the operators of vehicles referred to in subsection 4(m)(i) and 4(m)(ii).

i. The streets set in Appendix 4 are hereby established as Dangerous Goods Routes.
ii. No person shall operate a vehicle transporting or designed for transporting dangerous goods that requires placards other than on a Dangerous Goods Route, except while such vehicle:
a) is making a collection or delivery, provided that the operator proceeds by the most direct route to or from the point of collection or delivery, as the case may be, to or from the nearest Dangerous Goods Route;
b) is proceeding to or from the business premises of the owner of the vehicle, provided that the operator proceeds by the most direct route to or from the business premises, as the case may be, to or from the nearest Dangerous Goods Route;
c) is proceeding to or from a garage for the purpose of repairs, servicing, or refueling, provided that the operator proceeds by the most direct route to or from the garage, as the case may be, to or from the nearest Dangerous Goods Route;.
iii. A person may operate a vehicle transporting or designed for transporting dangerous goods in bulk that requires placards on any route other than on a Dangerous Goods Route, where the operator is:
a) in the course of delivering heating fuel to a residence;
b) in the course of delivering cylinders containing oxygen for medical purposes;
c) utilizing an eating establishment on Main Street;
iv. No person shall park a vehicle transporting or designed for transporting dangerous goods that require placards, for a period of time exceeding two (2) consecutive hours, within one hundred and fifty (150) metres of any residence, educational institution or place of public assembly.
